I recently saw a post come thru my Facebook feed from a sweet friend of mine, Priscilla “Prissy”, sharing with us that she just got diagnosed with breast cancer. Amidst a big transition in their lives, a big move from Paris to the US, new jobs, and a mother of 3 little ones, 10, 4, and 1, this came their way. And not JUST breast cancer, but an aggressive form of breast cancer. My heart sank with a feeling like SERIOUSLY? This CAN’T be? This amazing woman, Prissy, is a woman of such strength, courage, kindness, selflessness, and a super fun spirit. Prissy is one sharp cookie. In addition to being a wife and mother of 3, she’s a writer for several publications, an author of several novels and a blogger.
The fact is Prissy isn’t my first friend hit with breast cancer. I can count so many friends who have experienced it, are finishing up chemotherapy, and friends who have lost loved ones from it. So I’m here today for bit of a “realistic” post and one to hopefully help those going thru this feel as beautiful as they can and would LOVE all of your input on it, too. I’m just one voice, one opinion.
First let me begin by saying Prissy’s recovery is the most important thing in all of this. THAT’S what matters most. But I believe strongly that a person’s attitude and mental part plays a HUGE role in recovering from an illness.
Because lets face it… no matter how much we can tell our loved ones that the most important thing is BELIEVING that THEY WILL BE OK! and that fashion and all that other “stuff” doesn’t matter, and that they’re truly beautiful from the inside out, that FEELING of FEELING beautiful always makes a woman feel good. Am I right? Putting it into perspective, how we look doesn’t really matter… it’s about GETTING WELL and killing the cancer. Buuuuuut… as women, no matter what, we want to feel beautiful. I think that FEELING always helps us hold our head higher, walk with our shoulders straight out, and gives us that extra bit of confidence. Now… take that GOOD INNER feeling, don’t you think that FEELING good inside might help beat that cancer too? Attitude is everything! I swear I believe that about pregnancy as well and what kind of babies we bring into the world (but that’s a whole other post!)
… sooooo… I want to share a few things things today… First, a light fashion post for those challenged going thru chemo. Actually, Prissy inspired me to do this from a post she put on Facebook yesterday.
Now… first things first. To shave or not to shave. Here’s my thought… I say SHAVE IT! I think watching it fall out might affect you more on a day by day basis mentally rather than getting rid of it all at once. If we KNOW it’s going to fall out slowly, why endure watching that? Just DO it. And be fabulous about it. Make a fashion statement about it. How? Let’s look at some options!
1. Wigs, and they come in different colors, and that site also has other styles. Have FUN with it!
2. Turbans.
3. Headwraps. Make it about style and fashion. (animal, mint, chevron)
4. Hats. (cream, black, aqua, fedora with flower)
5. Earring cuffs. Play up your jewelry. (1, 2, 3)
6. Statement necklaces. (4, 5)
Second thing I wanted to share with you guys is the sweetest thing her hubby did. He wrote a letter for all of her peeps to see and started a GO FUND ME page to help with expenses. His letter is so endearing… please take a look. I know you might not know her personally, but if you want to donate even the smallest amount, I know their family would appreciate it so.
Third, please chime in on your suggestions as to what Prissy could do for her fashion statements and dealing with the new look.
Finally, the last thing I wanted to share with you is simply to just appreciate what blessings we have in life. In our friendships, with our loved ones. How a life can be changed in the blink of an eye when you’re struck with illness. I know Prissy, in my heart of hearts, you’re going to KICK A** with this thing! You’re SO going to beat it, and it’s going to be the foundation of your next book! In the meantime… you’re going to look fabulous fighting it every step of the way! {wink!}
