Bridging The Gap: The Forever Fierce Revolution

A mentor is defined as an experienced and trusted adviser.   The one thing that I’ve learned as I’ve gotten older is that we never stop learning and never stop growing.   There are opportunities for us to grow as women throughout our lives and it’s a never-ending process.  So when I was invited to be a part of the Bridging The Gap campaign, hosted by CatherineGraceO, my heart could not be any fuller!   For those of you who know already what I do, my number one passion through The OP Life IS to empower other women to Design Their Best Lives and live On Purpose.  I do so by sharing ways to make their lives fun, flavorful, and full of zest in the ways they live it daily.  What makes this campaign so special and so unique and close to my heart is how it’s set up.  100 middle aged influencers have been paired with 100 millennial influencers to “mentor” each other.  We can grow from the young as much as the youth can grow from us!  This world is ever-changing, literally daily, things are happening that we (old older women) think of and process things in such different ways than our younger women.  So for this, as I said earlier, we’re constantly learning, growing and becoming better versions of ourselves.  ALL of us, at ALL ages.

This almost reminds me of Women On Purpose but we’re paired off to learn and grow from each other.  It’s brilliant!

Which brings me to the girl who I’m so delighted to share with all of you and some things she has taught me along the way.

Meet Margo, of Honestly Margo.  Shocker right?  HA!  For those of you new to me and meeting me for the first time, this teen (barely a millennial) is my daughter AND  a boss babe.  She brings to the table a lot for her age, a lot of wisdom many millennials wouldn’t have under their belt, so for this reason, she was an appropriate mentor for me.   Wait what?  Yes…  I’ve taught her a thing or two about business but did I say her mentor me?  Yup.  You got it.  Believe it or not, she’s taught me a thing or two.

Margo was always this entrepreneurial driven type of child.  Never played with dolls and always googled “ways to make money.”  She watched Shark Tank every Friday night and look for ways to bring out this business thing in her.  After multiple attempts at different products and services she started, her final one at age 11 was a hit.  She created a lip balm that was the bomb!  Selling them by the tens and dozens each day at school was the beginning of her venture into business.  We got serious about it and from there, Honestly Margo was born.

Four years later, her original three products have now grown to 5 product lines and are found in stores coast to coast.

Her Unicorn Bath Fizzy Dust is the only product currently in the marketplace like it.  It’s an alternative to a bath bomb.  Sprinkle a little or a lot into your warm bath to create the fizzy magic! Fun huh?

Last January, we had a TV special on TLC, Kid Tycoons.

In addition, Margo released her first book, Teen Boss Code, this fall which shares tips on starting a business, not only for a teen but for anyone wanting to start something from a passion.

Before I share with you some things she’s taught me, I have to say that I am her mom and of course, that comes first.  I shared a bit about us HERE and what I’ve done to raise a confident daughter.  But we have such an interesting relationship, and as anyone who has seen us together can attest to that.  It’s mother/daughter, it’s friend/friend, it’s business partners, and it’s also one that is “make me a better me” on both sides.  That’s why this campaign couldn’t be a better fit for us than this.

So what has this cute chic taught me?  A lot.

She’s taught me to be resilient when the chips are down.  She has heard no in her business many times before she got to where she is now.  And still, hears no!  We hear no in life.  I’ve seen her time and time again get up, dust off her shoulders, and keep pressing forward and pressing on.

She’s taught me too much can be too much.  What do I mean by that?  She’s point blank said, MOM!  People will UNFOLLOW if you post all the time.  Guess what?  I believe that to be totally true!  It’s a generational thing!  She knows what “they want”.  So I listen and grow from her advice.  Makes sense!

She’s taught me what’s cool, what’s not, what’s cheezy, what’s hip and what is a definite no-no.  Yes I have my own sense of style and how I do things, and she loves my style and often I find her style to be almost identical to mine, but she also has grounded me and let me know how others can see things, especially in the generation behind mine.  I appreciate that advice because I don’t want to look foolish and need to still remember my age!  (It’s hard when we feel like we’re 25 to still be appropriate, right?)

She’s taught me grit and persistence.   She works her tail off and won’t stop till she finds what she’s looking for, creates what she’s trying to make, reach that goal, and do whatever it takes to make IT happen.  There’s something SO exciting happening the end of October I can’t even stand it and still need to be tight-lipped about it, but it was something she said to me when she was 11.  She said it with stars in her eyes but worked her ass off to make it happen, and the cat will be let out of the bag then.  But it brings tears to my eyes to see the DRIVE in her eyes and her actions to follow through to make those dreams a reality.  If that’s not a lesson to all of us, at any age, then I don’t know what is.

She’s taught me to let go and have fun sometimes.  Those of us who love what we do so much that never turn off our spinning wheels need that reminder.  What fun is life if we’re always thinking about work?  It’s not a bad thing if we love it.  However, for those around us, it’s not always perceived that way.  Sometimes we need to just let loose and enjoy life, and that means unplugging and living life for what it is!

So back to this mentoring and bridging the gap thing.  What an honor to be a part of this beautiful campaign.  As I talk about in 7 Days On Purpose, we never stop growing.  Let’s come together as women, lift each other up, support one another, be examples for each other, and learn and grow to be our best selves.
