This weekend marks the annual Greek Festival in Oklahoma City and, of course, I couldn’t be more excited! I get to share with the rest of the world a bit of what it’s like to live a big fat Greek life!
A few things you know about me… I love food, I love to eat, we love to drink, and we love to dance (you know that if you follow me on Instagram on my Insta-stories!)
Being that this is #FuzzyFriday, we are talking drinks!
You’ll find of course soft drinks and water but you’ll also find Greek wines, and a few other traditional Greek liquors… Ouzo and Metaxa.
Ouzo is a clear liquor and it’s consumed straight and on the rocks. Once the ice gets to it, it turns an almost milky-white color and it has a distinct strong licorice flavor. It’s BEYOND strong to say the least. It’s something most Greeks sip on when they are with friends having “meze” which is short for “mezethakia” or appetizers. That can be sausages to spanakopites and tiropites to cheese and olives. You want to PROCEED with caution when drinking this for sure and do NOT drink this on an empty stomach!
The second drink you’ll find is Metaxa. It’s considered a Greek “brandy” but it’s actually a blend of brandy and a muscat wine plus some botanicals including anise and rose petals. It’s again a sipping drink, served in celebrations, served when friends gather for “meze”, but also interestingly enough, served at funerals and wake services with homemade biscotti.
You can read more about the Greek Festival in this previous post. I’ll be there each day helping at the honey puffs and serving up Greek coffee. Come say hi! OPA!!!
Happy Weekend!
