Ponder this… Do you eat to live or do you live to eat? It is my belief that 2 of the greatest pleasures in life are food and sex. Think about it…. am I right or not? We can leave the sex talk for another day! So then I’m challenging you to think of food and “diet” in a different light… Why do you eat? Do you eat what you eat because it’s YUMMY? Does it make your eyeballs roll to the back of your head? … oops, lets not confuse that with the sex! HA! Are all your social activities revolving around food? OR do you live to eat? Do you think of the food and the choices you make when you eat as feeding your body the nourishment it needs to run at its best? Is food really a “social” thing for you?
Don’t get me wrong. Breaking bread amongst friends is a great thing! Gathering around the table to spend time together is a great thing. In fact, isn’t that what we SHOULD be doing with our families? (other than when we’re all zooming all over the place getting the kids from one activity to the next, everyone eating on the fly!!)
I remember growing up as a girl going to Greece in the summers and my yiayia and mom would go to the butcher and the market to get the foods we would be eating that day in the morning. As we were taking our last bites of breakfast, our words were, “what’s for lunch and dinner”? Of course, it did have to do with planning, but food is always a thought.
I went to the store today and quite frankly, I was embarrassed at my karochi (pronounced like it’s spelled, it’s the Greek word for shopping cart, which some words, I just MUST use Greek, and karochi is one of them!) because I was tired of hearing my family bitching about having NO FUN FOOD in the house. Which means I must now REALLY excersize self control. Why??? Because I CAVED and bought ice cream, brownies, brown rice sea salt chips for moi (halfway healthy?), ready made iced coffee…. WTH am I thinking???? You’d think we were having a snow storm! But, I was tired of the moaning of nothing to snack on. …. which leads me NOW to …
SELF CONTROL, and do we eat to live or live to eat?
Remember I told you my thoughts on life’s 2 greatest pleasures? Well here is where it comes into action! To have allllll this s**t around that is VERY tasty is a challenge. Remember, it’s kinda pleasureable to satisfy those taste buds, comfort food, mmmmm so good? Right? So then, here comes SELF CONTROL. Nope… I really don’t need 4 scoops of ice cream, maybe a tablespoon, AFTER I eat dinner as a tiny dessert. Point being, portion control and moderation. Because if it’s just there, we can graze all day long, right? I mean, why not?
That’s not the purpose of really why we are eating 🙂 Think about it.
What do we teach out kids? “Not after you finish your dinner” (unless you’re Honey Boo Boo, and that’s a WHOLE other discussion!) We feed them all the right things early on, to grow and thrive, from fruits to veggies and then introduce the meats…. And really think about their health early on.
Lil guy above was the same guy eating spaghetti tacos here.
But, if we just left it to them, they would eat only when theyre hungry. They’re not saying at breakfast, “what’s next?” When they ask for treats, we teach them, “not until after dinner” or “it will spoil your appetite before dinner”.
Why don’t we practice this ourselves? I’m sharing these thoughts with all of you friends as I ponder them myself too. Trust me. Big girl panties on now with a little bit of junk in the house! HA! SELF CONTROL!
Being that it’s a Monday, just trying to be a little On Purpose with my health. Key word = TRYING! 🙂
