Workplace Wardrobe Essentials

Recently I was so honored to be asked to record a podcast for Blogging 4 Jobs by Jessica Miller-Merrell. Blogging 4 Jobs is a top blog/resource in the HR industry. Jessica is a sought after speaker, author, internet web show hostess, and professional on all things social media and HR. Not only is she all of those amazing things, she’s a dear friend and mentor to me. So of course when she asked me to collaborate on this project, I was delighted to share with her and all of her audience my “Passion for Fashion”.

Although I work from home now, that wasn’t always the case. I did work years ago in a very professional setting, so much so that pants were JUST being allowed for women. Isn’t that crazy? HA! Well, times certainly have changed, but the question of how to build a wardrobe for the workplace remains. Of course this is all relative to what kind of work you’re in, but generally speaking, this is what I PERSONALLY would put together as some of the basics if I were meeting with clients, had meetings and prospecting for new business. These would be some basics and staples I would put together as a starting point with pieces that would mix and match. Not only are they great pieces for your work wardrobe, but they can be worn separately with so many other things.

Here is a simplified list of some must haves to dress for success:

A great jacket
A white shirt
A great pair of black pants and a black skirt
A classic large bag
Classic shoes that have a flair of style
Simple jewelry

I’m not a simple person, but I’m definitely not in my opinion an over the top person either. Even though I might like bling and boldness, I also find that sometimes too much takes away that classiness that we look for in dressing for success. Sometimes being simply understated is a “less is more” statement. And when it comes to work, I think that’s a great thought to have on how you look. Elegant, sophisticated, chic, clean and someone who is in charge and knows how to get the job done.

Remember, what you project will affect how you’re treated. And how you dress will affect how you carry yourself which will in turn affect what kind of job you do.
