As a parent, I feel I have a responsibility to teach and show my kids certain things when traveling (and otherwise), help them learn and grow, and to experience those things that until now, have they only seen online, in textbooks, or on tv. Hence, you can call me the “tour guide” or as I have called part of this summer, “our summer vacation is one big field trip”.
So if you find yourself ever traveling to Greece, I wanted to share with you some key points of interest (not including SHOPPING) this and places worth seeing…
The Acropolis in Athens…. it’s quite a walk up, however if we could walk to the top of the Arc de Triumph in Paris, and go thru all the museums that we did there, we most DEFINITELY could do this. Note to self and future travelers: go as early as you can to beat the heat, and wear shoes that are pretty rugged. You see all these steps? All of those and all the rocks walking up are MARBLE. What that means is that they are SLICK. But finally, we made it to the top, even in the heat….
and the view from the top was amazing!
So much so that lil guy is all about the pics now….
Another MUST do is the new Acropolis Museum in Athens, however, at this point, we were SO pooped, that we decided to save something for a future trip.
In addition to seeing the Acropolis, another must do is Syntagma Square, the tomb of the unknown soldier. That is where you see the very well known image of these tall, well built, beautiful men….
Again, try to go when the sun isn’t at it’s peak like we did. Also, take some crackers with you… LOTS of them. Because, you’ll see lots of THIS….
We were fortunate to arrive at the perfect time… at the changing of the guards… take a look at this short video…. WAY cool!
Another place we ventured to was Olympia, the birth place of the Olympic Games. Now…. at this point, we were worn out with the sight seeing and “touristy” things. So we had 2 options…. either 1. Go in THROUGH the ruins and see where they played and see the actual track and field area (IN the heat), or 2. Drive by and just LOOK at it, hop out of the car and go “oooooooh… there it is!!!”. We chose plan B. At this point, I said “kids, here is the CLIFF NOTES version of Olympia.”
“Look kids… there it is!!! OOoooooh … aaaaaaaaah….. ohhhhhhhhh!!!”
Is that where they light the Olympic flame??? Yup!
Just a few touristy, sightseeing things I recommend if traveling to Greece. At the end of the day, the kids can one day say “CHECK!! DONE THAT!”
Can you tell I love my heritage and am so proud to share it? {grinning from ear to ear}
Filakia! More to come…. even if I finish back home… I have TONS to share!
