This weekend my daughter celebrated her birthday with her classmates. It was her big 13 and I wanted to do something special, yet not over the top, but still something great, and not overboard. We chose to do a party at the roller rink (remember THOSE days!!), but try to keep it as elegant and not cheezy if possible. So here’s how it all went down where it didn’t break my budget and still looked pretty great.
1. First I picked a theme. As I was searching for some invites, this one popped out at me and called my name. And that set the tone and direction of how the whole thing was going to go. I LOVE Paperless Post! My new evite type of system that is so beautifully done. And NOW they offer designs by many designers including kate spade new york, Jonathan Adler, Crane & Co., and now Kelly Wearstler!!! I MEAN HAVE YOU EVER????? So… the guests got this lovely Paperless Post invite via email…
It was sort of Tiffany Blue meets Disco! HA! So then what to do at a roller rink with that???
2. Centerpieces I created myself to give it that sparkly look without buying real disco balls. And where would I put them? And would the kids even appreciate them? So here was my answer to it all…
I bought white foam balls, used silver tinsel, and went to my craft store and found some outstanding silver-type fake flowers (but not really flowers) in the fake flower department. Assemble them in any random ways in clear vases, piercing the branches into the foam balls. It looked something like this…
Do you see the little disco balls on those branchy things? {grin!}
3. Food and treats can always accentuate the theme. I did a mini cake for her and bite sized cupcakes for the kids so they wouldn’t have to mess with forks, plates, and have more to deal with. Keeping it simple with 45 13-year olds was my goal!
4. The extras were the final touch. There were a total of 14 tables there. No way was I going to do all of the 14 long tables, however I did do up a few key ones. The 2 main ones I rented white long table cloths and did silver sequins runners along the centers. Those 2 (actually, those were 4… being 2 put together for each) had the cakes and the pizza. The rest is where I sprinkled in the centerpieces I made from home. I also “drizzled” the simple silver tinsel across the tables.
Another bit of extras I put together were some things that I think made it kinda special and “fancy” for a roller rink party, as well.
I had some napkins done with her initials (you can’t tell from this picture, but they look watermarked, which gave it yet another touch of sophistication). I bought gray and white straws and put them in the fun hurricane glasses. I also bought fun party beads for the kids to wear in silver and blue, and even some larger ones with disco balls! (I was MOST excited about these, and not a single kid took any to wear. Shows you what I know about what is cool and what’s not, right?? But it looked cute, and that’s all that matters! HA!)
I also brought maraschino cherries to add to their soft drinks. The kids did love that!
So the final look?
There you have it! Trying to create something young and fun and elegant and hip for one special teen!
