I updated my kitchen several years ago, and because it’s connected to my family room, the family room needed to follow. But it didn’t. I need to paint the walls, change up the woodwork as well, and then of course the fluff will follow with furniture, window treatments and accessories.
Here is why I have been dragging my feet and the issue I’ve been having.
The built in for the TV.
We built our house like 17 years ago…. back when the BIG screen TVs were in and they were TALL and BIG and in a BOX type of thing…. {sigh}. So now we have this big “hole” in the wall for something to fit that, and next to it, another DEEP cased opening that was for the “stereo and video equipment” back then. (lol!) I want a much larger TV but clearly, the cased opening isn’t allowing me to have one much larger than this (unless I mount it on the OUTSIDE of those columns, which I think would look goofy).
Here’s my question to all of you…. I have come to a resolution in my head I THINK, but I’d love to hear it from you….. should I
- A. Leave it as is, just repaint it, because with the scale of the room, it’s still fine. I can still see everything fine from the kitchen. (and I hate to tear out those beautiful columns!)
- B. Gut that whole wall, have the carpenter match the crown at the top to make it all align and flush and make that whole all flat with sheet rock so I can put a MASSIVE TV there
- C. Other options that I haven’t thought of?
I don’t want our TV over the fireplace. Frankly, I love the traditional-ness of the fireplace for that. Displaying a piece of art but not a TV. I don’t want that at all.
Here are a few other views of the room…
What I’m planning on fluffing up:
- * Reupholstering my chair and a half and ottoman… One of THE MOST COMFY pieces I have and will NEVER part with it EVER.
- * Reupholstering the chair next to the bar.
- * Getting rid of the toile balloon shades and replacing them with something else for privacy…
- * MAYBE painting the bar a different color… the marble is like a dark verde green… remember when THAT was popular? ya. back then.
- * Maybe changing some of the art? The oil paintings we have we brought back from Greece our first year we were married… special, yes, but need a little refreshing, YES.
Ok… so chime in, tell me what would you do.
Oh… one more fixture that remains permanent in the room…
This princess chic.

Paint the bar black. Put the paintings in your bedroom or bathroom or closet…that’s your personal space and don’t go with the style you are wanting to achieve from that room. Paint the rest of the woodwork…either the color of woodwork in kitchen or the taupe color of the crown.

I agree on the bar. I actually thought about painting the moulding on the front of the bar beneath the barstools gold! 🙂 and then add mirror backsplash too.
