Sometimes it feels as if every time we turn on the TV, or scroll thru social media, we see nothing but sad or tragic things. And sometimes it’s hard to not let those things get to us. I know I’m very sensitive to some of the things I see and it can be difficult to find some peace of mind. So today I thought I’d share a few pointers that have helped me discover some calm among the storm.
Shut out the world.
I know this feels like an impossible task, and may make you feel like you’re missing important information, but I encourage you to turn off the news and your social media sites for a few hours a day. Even if we don’t pay close attention to the negativity that fills our screens, the immense amount of negative news and social media arguments that are going on can bring us down and make even our own private world feel more out of control.
The simple step of shutting out the negativity for a few hours a day can make a huge difference. Give it a try. You’ll be shocked at how that one simple change will improve your peace of mind.
Routine.
When things feel chaotic, one of the best things to do is control the things that we can actually control. Setting a simple routine will make a big difference in helping you regain some control in your life. While everything else may feel helpless, knowing what’s on your plate and the items you’ll be tackling through the day will reduce your stress, which will reduce your overall negativity.
Find the Good
One of the best ways to find some peace is to look for it. Mr. Rogers once said: “When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.’”
What great advice! What Fred Rogers mother was doing was to train him to change his perspective of the negative events by finding and focusing on the good in the world. It can be difficult in painful situations, but if you look hard enough, there will be something good that you can choose to focus on. Doing so will diminish the negative and train you to change your perspective – both of which will help you find peace when the world goes crazy.
Journal
Nothing helps us process events and reduce our stress like letting it all out, but often, we don’t have someone we can talk to or we don’t want to depress or increase the stress in others by sharing our feelings with them.
One of the best ways to process our thoughts about our life and what’s going on in the world is to write it down. Whether it’s a nice journal, an old notebook, or even a journaling app on your laptop or phone, writing down your thoughts will help to clear your mind. Often, if you’ll simply write down whatever flows into your mind, you’ll be shocked to find that you can gain some great insight into your thoughts and feelings, and with insight comes peace.
I picked out a few pretty journals if you’re ready to get started now.
Bad things happen, life gets out of control and we feel powerless and anything but at peace, but implementing these four simple elements to your life can improve your quality of life and peace of mind. Give them a try and let me know how it goes. Comment below! I’d love to hear from you!
